Renfield is Vlad's father figure, because his parents are just to busy to be around him. Poor Vlad is a walking contract, so to speak. His father wanted a heir, so, everyone trying to take his place as the head of the Dracula family would try to kill the child first (if they kill Viktor first, all the power in the family gets shifted and the succession line is messed). This way, he would have at least a warning before being killed. Vlad's mother, Diana, agreed to bear him because she would be the second in command of the family, as long as Viktor lives (If he dies, Vlad takes the family leadership and he gots to choose who will be his right-hand. Probably will be Bessie, as she was trained all her life for that, and he knows that, even if he doesn't like it).

As a result of wanting to have children just for business purposes, they aren't that much emotionally attached to the boy. They give him as much money as he wants, and he has the best guardians and tutors they can buy. Don't get me wrong, they are not cruel or abusive parents. They just act around him like strangers - they are kind to him, but so distant that they have no idea why he is so rebellious and alone.

And yes, Vlad has a pet wolf. :3 Unfortunately, Fangs has to stay in Transylvania, but Vlad always see it in his holidays.
